Suffrage Flags Displayed at Homes and Businesses

You may notice flags and buntings with purple, white and gold stripes and star at homes and businesses around Tioga County. These are Suffrage Flags and a symbol of the Suffrage Movement that was created in the early 1900's. The colors represent loyalty (purple), purity (white) and hope (yellow), and the stars represent the 39 states that voted to ratify the 19th Amendment on August 18th, 1920. Displaying this flag is a way to acknowledge this auspicious anniversary and remember the women and men who fought for decades for the right to vote for women in the United States.
